"Emperor: Battle for Dune" Good Buy
Westwood Studios

“Battle for Dune” hit the deck with a lot of hype but failed to deliver in the long run. It’s a solid RTS game that players will enjoy but it’s not new. It feels very similar to the granddaddy of RTS games, “Total Annihilation” (which I love and still play a couple of times a year). However, the game play is not as deep as TA and the landscape (the planet of Dune) gets very boring after a while. The graphics are top notch and the unit mix is intriguing. The game interface is a cut and paste of Westwood’s “Red Alert 2” so players of that game can hit the ground running. Just make sure you keep an eye on your harvesters and be prepared for the land rushes that invariable come with a computer opponent that knows exactly what to build and in what order to make your life hell. It’s a good game, not a great one. I give it a “Buy” rating.
